Vriska - Grins and Duct Tape by CardboardSwords Vriska - Grins and Duct Tape by CardboardSwords
Complete Vriska cosplay. I'll be wearing this Sunday of AB '11, so see you there guys!

My ro8arm is made of duct tape and my horns are made of model magic, because I am a professional. My wig is a Ferrari from Arda-Wigs in Black. My contacts are DollyEye Brown, from PinkyParadise.com. In other photos I'm wearing DollyEye blue or Neo Dali Extra Size blue contacts. I am wearing Manic Panic's After Midnight Blue lipstick and Kryolan gray face paint, along with some brand of blue eyeliner that is really bright but also never washes off. My shirt is from WhatPumpkin.

EDIT:
Oh hey! I found a better makeup. It's a light gray Mehron creamblend stick; it goes on really easily and stays on very well and is generally just the best.

Let me just start off by saying that your Vriska cosplay is amazing :D Did you use a headband for your horns and if not, how? Also are you going to AB next year? I'm going as Nepeta :3

Thank you! Yes I do use a headband. I just style my wig hair over the headband to disguise it. I'm pretty sure I won't be going because I'll be out of the country unfortunately!

If you were in Michigan with that arm, nobody would even notice-this place is covered in the stuff. XD
I also cosplay Vriska-but quite honestly you've done a much better job than I. :D:D:D

Haha, unfortunately the arm really doesn't hold up well. I'll make another at some point that's much sturdier.

Naww, every cosplay has its good points and points where it could be better! I'm trying to improve mine just as I'm sure you're improving yours. Cosplay is an individual skill that takes time and work, and everyone's just trying to do their best. That's what counts, I think.

Definitely. ouo
I look for help on lots of Tumblr pages and google images. If they fail, then I just ask my friends. :3
I need to get new shoes for my outfit, what I have right now are some slip on fake Converse that I painted red.

Is there anything you did to the wig?
Also, is the wig layered much?
(Sorry, having some wig problems over here. >_>)

I did not cut the wig at all. I styled the bangs around my face a little, but this wig's just what I wanted without me having to do much to it. It's a little layered at the bottom, yes.

I hope you can solve those soon!

First thing, you're cosplay is wonderful. I've been reading everyone's questions to get a good idea for what I can do. I'm stuck making 3 sets of horns (Vriska for my self, Terezi and Aradias....) as well as John's hammer and my ro8o arm : /

The problem I'm actually having is finding a decent jacket. I'm assuming my best bet is just to look around goodwill huh?

I got about a month to get all of this stuff together, so any advise is wonderful so I'm not running around like a fuckass a week before the con. Thanks!

Thank you! Man that's a lot to do. I wish you luck- I'm working on a huge project right now and I know what it's like to have a lot on your plate.

My jacket is actually a gray button-up shirt, which I got from either Old Navy or the Gap or something. Goodwill sounds good, so does just looking around for gray jackets and shirts online. You'll find something that strikes your fancy somewhere!

I have been trying to make the robot arm and horns but failed fantastically! :iconcryforeverplz:

I was wondering if I could commission you to make both of them? And if so How much would you do it for?

Hm. I can totally do the horns, no problem, but I'm not really comfortable with the quality of my roboarm enough to make one for another person. Horns would be like $15.

The horns then would be fine! I live in the UK, would it be here before 28th October do you think? If so i'd like to commission you to make them as soon as possible please! :iconiloveyouplz:

Is there a glove or something underneath the duct tape?

I tried to use the tape over a really long glove and it was way too tight ):

I used a short glove for the hand, and the sleeve is a separate tube of gray fabric I made. Having the arm in two parts makes it way easier to get on (also, having the sleeve have a seam that can be opened to remove the arm is best) and also has the convenience of being able to just take the hand off and use your hand without removing the whole arm.

How do you "seal" the body paint?

I have everything but the wig, and body paint, and I just want to make sure I don't screw up. .___.

You buy a spray sealant for it, and I'd recommend a powder sealant as well. I use Mehron Barrier Spray and a Mehron Translucent Setting Powder. Apply the powder over your makeup, thicker over places that tend to rub against clothes or otehr skin, dust the excess off with a brush, and seal it with a few sprays of sealant.

Thank you! I tried to get the striped and jointed affect whilst keeping the largest amount of movement possible. Unfortunately I'll have to make a new arm if I want to cosplay that version again, because the arm just wasn't very durable.

Thanks XD I tried to represent her blue mascara/eyeliner/whatever as well as I could without having blue lashes. I'll actually be getting some blue lashes soon, too, so that'll go on top of the makeup I already wear for her.

Fantastic cosplay, to begin with. ^_^
For the horns, how long did they take to dry, and what kind of paint did you use on them?
Reply
:iconcardboardswords:
CardboardSwords Featured By Owner Jul 10, 2011
The exterior of the horns dried overnight, and I turned them over every hour or so in the beginning to make sure they didn't flatten. They dried completely in 2 days, after which I painted them with some cheap acrylic paint.

Model magic is paint-able after about a day of drying, but it dries completely through in about 2 or 3, depending on the thickness of whatever you're making.

bluh, im just gonna be annoying and ask a question:
How do you get it to work on your hands? :B do you like, just put it on the top and leave your palms? and does it rub or sweat of easily? (adfjkl so many questions, im sorry XD)

:iconcardboardswords:

I painted all over my hand and seal it more than I would my face. Some of it comes off on my palm and fingertips, but it stays on pretty well, especially since I don't go touching tons of stuff (can't stand the feel of fake nails). I didn't make a gray skin glove/sleeve because it's only my one hand that's showing.

The paint does rub off on my shirt collar and beneath my glasses because combination of sweat + oily skin + friction, but it stays well in areas where it's not being rubbed a lot.

Dude don't worry I love answering questions. Questions are the best.

Hello!
I am working on my cosplay of Vriska now, and I am curious to know how you made that arm so nicely!
That is one of the main concerns of my supplies. Did you JUST use duct tape, a glove underneath? Tell me your magic, please~
By the way...you make a wonderful Vriska~ Lovely eyes~
Reply
:iconcardboardswords:
CardboardSwords Featured By Owner May 5, 2011
I just used duct tape with a glove underneath for the hand. For the arm, I sewed a sleeve out of gray fabric, which I then taped the strips of duct tape to. I didn't want to have to use twice as much duct tape as I needed to cover it, so the duct tape strips are backed with paper. This gives the added bonus of making the strips stiffer.

Having the glove be separate from the sleeve is a lifesaver. That way I can just take off the glove if I ever need to, you know, use my hand at all, or if it gets hot or uncomfortable. But I did have trouble taking off the sleeve afterwards- so I'd make it out of a stretchy, looser fabric.

Thank you very much! She's a lot of fun to cosplay, so it's nice to hear I'm doing it well~
